Herbal tea is an infusion of leaves, seeds, roots or bark, extracted in hot water. In drinking  well-steeped herbal tea, we get all the plant’s benefits in an easily digestible form. Tea presents a social element since it is something that you can share with people while also getting the aromatherapy at the same time in addition to the health benefits.

Some of the common herbal teas in Uganda include;
1. Cinnamon tea (Mudalasini): Lowers blood pressure and improves blood circulation. Regulates blood sugar by aiding insulin to work more effectively. Has anti-cancer properties. Eases cold symptoms. Relieves upset stomach. Relieves menstrual cramps.
Ginger tea: It is great for nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion and cramping. It can help reduce stress and anxiety levels. Regulates blood sugar. It thins blood, reducing the chance of heart diseases.

2. Hibiscus tea: It is helpful in treating conditions such as sore throats, gum disease and cystitis. It boosts the immune system. May slow down the growth of precancerous cells because of its antioxidant properties. Improves heart health by lowering cholesterol. May help in weight loss as it reduces the amount of sugars the body absorbs.

3. Peppermint (Mujaaja): Excellent for digestive problems, it is also good for cold and flu. It can also help relieve the hot flashes of menopause. Relieves abdominal gas and bloating.

4. Green tea: May inhibit certain cancers. Improves heart health. It is used in raising metabolism and increasing fat break down thus weight loss. Treatment and prevention of cancer. Reduces the level of cholesterol in blood. Keeps your teeth healthy and kills bacteria which causes the dental plaque.

There are countless other herbal teas, so you have a wide variety to choose from.  These include Bergamot, Chamomile, Fennel, Juniper Berry, Lavender, Lemon grass, Lemon Myrtle, Raspberry Leaf, Sage, Spearmint and Vervain.

Herbal tea should always be immersed in a covered container to hold the beneficial essential oils otherwise, your room will smell nice when you aren’t retaining the medicinal properties.
